SOFA-NYC hosts panel discussion

“What happens when one woman’s passion for tapestry unites the creative efforts of innovative artisans with major painters and sculptors?” A master weaver, a contemporary art critic and the author of Gloria F. Ross & Modern Tapestry (Yale, 2010) will explore the ambitious career of Gloria Ross (1923–98), who worked with European and American weavers to interpret modernist imagery into handmade tapestries. Designed by Frankenthaler (Ross’s sister), Motherwell (brother-in-law), Avery, Bearden, Dubuffet, Hofmann, Jenkins, Nevelson, Noland, Podwal, Stella, Youngerman and others, these collaborative projects set modern tapestry apart as unique form of contemporary art.


Archie Brennan has been a leading international figure in tapestry for more than 25 years. His work is in major art museums around the world and he has taught and lectured at universities and art schools since 1962. He served as artistic director of the Dovecot Studios, Edinburgh Tapestry Company in Scotland, and collaborated with Gloria Ross on many stellar tapestry projects.

Grace Glueck was an art reporter, editor, and critic in the New York Times Cultural News Department for more than three decades. In addition to reporting on many of the leading artists of the late 20th century, with whom Gloria Ross worked, Glueck and Ross were long-term personal friends. Glueck wrote the Foreword to Gloria F. Ross & Modern Tapestry (Yale, 2010).

Ann Lane Hedlund is author of Gloria F. Ross & Modern Tapestry (Yale University Press in association with Arizona State Museum, 2010). An ethnographer who studies living artists and their cultural heritage, she explores the personal, social and cultural relationships involved in producing art. A foremost authority on historic and modern Native weaving of the American Southwest, she is professor and curator of anthropology at Arizona State Museum in Tucson.


Derek E. Ostergard is a senior expert in the history of European decorative arts, dating from the mid-eighteenth to the middle of the twentieth century. He is the former Associate Director and Founding Dean of the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design and Culture in NYC. Dr. Ostergard has also served on the graduate studies faculties of the Cooper-Hewitt Museum,  Fashion Institute of Technology, and Sotheby’s Works of Art programs. He has curated many exhibitions and authored/edited many accompanying catalogues.
